Subclass 190 Visa – Northern Territory (NT) Nomination
The Northern Territory (NT) State Nomination for the Subclass 190 Visa offers an additional five points towards meeting the Department of Home Affairs’ skilled visa points test, which requires a minimum of 65 points.
NT 190 Visa Requirements
To migrate to Australia under a skilled visa, applicants and their dependent family members must meet the Department of Home Affairs’ requirements. The key criteria include:
- Age: Applicants must be under 45 years at the time of nomination.
- Skills Assessment: A full skills assessment from a relevant Australian assessing authority for the nominated occupation is required.
- English Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate competency in English, typically equivalent to at least IELTS 6.0 in each band, unless otherwise specified.
- Points Test: A minimum of 65 points on the skilled migration points test is required.
Requirements for Applicants Already Residing in Australia
Eligible NT Graduates for Subclass 190 NT Nomination
International student graduates from NT institutions may be eligible for Subclass 190 nomination if they:
- Have completed one or more qualifications after two years of study in the NT at an NT-based institution.
- Have lived in the NT for at least six continuous months immediately after completing their last qualification, holding a visa with no work limitations (graduates may apply for a Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa to meet this requirement).
- Have made genuine and sustained efforts to secure employment in their nominated occupation or a closely related skilled occupation in the NT.
International graduates unable to reside in the NT for six months after completing their studies may only be considered for a Subclass 491 nomination. Evidence of efforts to secure NT employment must be provided.
Other Eligible NT Residents
Applicants residing in the NT on temporary visas with work rights may be eligible for Subclass 190 nomination if they:
- Have lived in the NT for at least two consecutive years before applying.
- Can demonstrate that none of their migrating dependents are residing outside of the NT.
- Have been employed full-time in an eligible occupation in the NT for at least two years and can prove their employment will continue for a further 12 months.
General Requirements
- Applicants or dependents currently residing in other Australian states or territories are not eligible for NT nomination.
- Student visa holders who did not complete their studies in the NT are also ineligible for nomination.
- Those already nominated for a Subclass 489 or 491 Visa by the NT cannot apply for Subclass 190.
Offshore Applicants
Offshore applicants are generally only considered for Subclass 491 NT nomination. They must meet the Department of Home Affairs’ general requirements and the following NT nomination criteria:
- At least one year of post-qualification work experience in their nominated occupation within the past 10 years (additional experience may be required for some priority occupations).
- A demonstrated commitment to living and working in the NT on a long-term basis.
- Proof of financial capacity to settle in the NT.
Offshore applicants can apply under three streams:
Priority Occupation Stream
Applicants under this stream must:
- Have a full migration skills assessment for an occupation listed on the Northern Territory Offshore Migration Occupations List (NTOMOL).
- Meet additional work experience requirements, if specified for their occupation.
NT Family Stream
Applicants must have a family member in the NT who:
- Is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen, or holds a relevant regional visa.
- Has been a resident of the NT for at least 12 months.
- Is an eligible relative or the spouse/partner’s eligible relative and is willing to provide settlement support in the NT.
Applicants must also demonstrate efforts to secure employment in the NT by researching the local job market and applying for relevant roles.
NT Job Offer Stream
Offshore applicants must have a verifiable job offer in their nominated occupation from an NT-based business that has been operating in the region for at least 12 months.
Commitment to the NT
By accepting NT state nomination for a Subclass 190 Visa, applicants agree to the following obligations:
- Live and work in the NT in their skilled occupation or a closely related occupation for at least three years after the visa is granted.
- Keep the NT Government informed of their visa status and arrival in the NT.
- Regularly provide updated contact details and participate in surveys by the NT Government.
Upon nomination, applicants must sign a declaration acknowledging these commitments.
Financial Capacity (For Offshore Applicants)
Offshore applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial capacity to settle in the NT by providing evidence of assets, such as bank statements, share certificates, or property valuations. The required minimum value of net assets varies depending on the number of family members:
- Individual applicant: AU$35,000
- Applicant and spouse: AU$50,000
- Applicant, spouse, and one child: AU$60,000
- Applicant, spouse, and two children: AU$65,000
