ANMAC Skills Assessment

ANMAC Skills Assessment

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) serves as the official skills assessment authority for nurses and midwives seeking to migrate to Australia. Appointed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), ANMAC operates as an independent accrediting body under Australia’s National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.

Skills Assessment Categories

ANMAC offers three distinct types of skills assessments:

  • Modified Skills Assessment: This is available for Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, or Midwives currently registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or registered as nurses or midwives in New Zealand. Applicants without current AHPRA registration may be deemed unsuitable for skilled migration.

  • Modified PLUS Skills Assessment: This assessment is suitable for individuals who do not hold registration in Australia as a Registered Nurse or Midwife but possess a current ‘Notice of In-Principle Approval of Registration Subject to Proof of Identity’ from AHPRA. Note that Enrolled Nurses are not eligible for this assessment, and applicants must maintain current overseas registration.

  • Full Skills Assessment: Applicants without Australian registration who possess a minimum Bachelor of Nursing qualification from Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, the United Kingdom, or the United States, and are registered as nurses in their home country, qualify for a full skills assessment. Similarly, those with a minimum Bachelor of Midwifery qualification from Ireland, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, or the United States, and who are registered as midwives, also qualify.

Steps for a Modified Skills Assessment

  1. Work Experience Verification: Applicants must ensure that verification of their registration is emailed to verification@anmac.org.au. ANMAC cannot assess work experience without this verification. AHPRA verification is not required, as ANMAC will confirm Australian registration internally.

  2. Proof of Identity: Submit a bio-statistical page of your passport, name change documents (if applicable), and a high-quality passport-sized photograph.

  3. Certificates and Transcripts: Provide graduation certificates and transcripts from all nursing qualifications, including overseas qualifications, regardless of current registration in Australia. Transcripts must specify commencement and completion dates.

  4. Statutory Declaration: If applying for an Enrolled Nurse Skills Assessment without overseas nursing qualifications, a statutory declaration is required.

  5. Professional References: Submit references to validate your employment as a paid nurse or midwife. Agency nurses must provide a service statement from their employer detailing employment dates and hours, along with a reference from a supervising nurse.

  6. English Language Requirement: Applicants for a modified skills assessment registered with AHPRA or the Nursing or Midwifery Council of New Zealand are not required to submit English language test results.

Steps for a Modified PLUS Skills Assessment

Follow the same steps as the Modified Skills Assessment, with the addition of:

  • Notice of In-Principle Registration: Include a copy of your current ‘Notice of In-Principle Registration Subject to Proof of Identity’ from AHPRA.

Steps for a Full Skills Assessment

In addition to the previous steps, applicants must:

  1. Professional Reference: Provide a reference with a minimum of three months of work experience.

  2. English Language Test: Submit your English language test number and date of completion. You must meet the minimum requirements before applying.

  3. Transcripts of Training: Include transcripts detailing theoretical and clinical hours completed during your course.

English Language Requirements

All internationally qualified nurses and midwives without Australian or New Zealand registration must provide English language test results. Proficiency in English is essential for effective communication with patients and colleagues in Australia.

Accepted English Language Tests

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Minimum overall score of 7, with at least 7 in each component.
  • Occupational English Test (OET) for Nurses: Minimum score of B in each component.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Minimum overall score of 65, with at least 65 in each communicative skill.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT: Minimum total score of 94, with specific minimum scores in each section.

These tests must be completed within two years of application, and only one test needs to be passed.
