Subclass 485 Visa Health Insurance

Before submitting your application for the Subclass 485 visa, you must secure appropriate and adequate health coverage. Your insurance should provide coverage for you and any dependent family members for medically necessary treatment, including transport.

Health Insurance Requirements for Subclass 485 Visa

To fulfill the health insurance requirements for the Subclass 485 visa, the application must include evidence that the primary applicant:

  • Had adequate arrangements for health insurance in Australia at the time the Subclass 485 visa application was submitted.
  • Has maintained adequate health insurance arrangements in Australia from the time of the visa application until a decision is made.

The requirement for sufficient health insurance coverage throughout the duration of the applicant’s stay will be enforced through the imposition of condition 8501 on all Subclass 485 visa holders.

Applicants who currently hold a student visa may present evidence of a valid Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) policy at the time of their visa application. If the applicant transitions from their student visa to a bridging visa upon expiration of their student visa, they must secure a non-OSHC policy to meet the health insurance requirement for their Subclass 485 visa application immediately after their OSHC expires.

If the applicant’s student visa remains valid at the time a decision is made on their Subclass 485 visa application and they have not obtained a non-OSHC health insurance policy, the Department may request evidence of adequate health insurance arrangements. This is necessary because the OSHC will cease to provide coverage when the Subclass 485 visa is granted, resulting in the cessation of the student visa.

For applicants who are not current student visa holders at the time of their application, OSHC is not acceptable as evidence of health insurance.

If an applicant is applying for a Subclass 485 visa from outside Australia as a subsequent entrant or as a primary applicant during a concession period, they must provide evidence of having a health insurance policy at both the time of their visa application and at the time a decision is made. This health insurance coverage may commence upon their arrival in Australia.

Health Insurance for Subsequent Entrants

For applicants applying for a Subclass 485 visa from outside Australia as subsequent entrants or primary applicants during a concession period, they must present evidence of a health insurance policy at the time of their visa application and at the time of decision. This health insurance coverage may begin upon their arrival in Australia.
