VETASSESS Skills Assessment in Australia
Overview of VETASSESS Skills Assessment
VETASSESS conducts comprehensive assessments of qualifications and work experience for prospective migrants, facilitating applications for employment, course entry, and industry membership.
Skills Assessment for Migration
VETASSESS serves as the designated assessment authority for both general and trade occupations.
Skills Assessment for Professional Occupations
A Skills Assessment is a crucial component of the professional recognition process when migrating to Australia. It determines whether applicants possess the necessary skills and knowledge to work in their designated occupation within the country. VETASSESS assesses over 360 professional occupations.
Skills Assessment for Trade Occupations
Similarly, a Trade Skills Assessment is essential for the trade recognition process for migration. It evaluates whether applicants have the requisite skills and knowledge for their specific trade occupations. VETASSESS evaluates 28 trade occupations, including roles such as electrician, welder, plumber, carpenter, cook, and motor mechanic.

Application Process for Professional Occupations
The VETASSESS full skills assessment involves evaluating both qualifications and employment against the eligibility criteria for your nominated occupation. The qualifications assessment determines the comparability of your educational level to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and assesses the relevance of your qualifications to your nominated occupation. The employment assessment evaluates whether your work experience, whether gained in Australia or overseas, meets the necessary skill level and relevance for your nominated occupation. A positive assessment of both qualifications and employment is essential for a successful skills assessment for skilled migration and visa purposes.
Nominating an Occupation
Only full-time, paid employment (minimum 20 hours per week) is considered for skills assessment. The primary tasks performed in your role should align closely with those typically undertaken in that occupation in Australia. Employment must be conducted at the required skill level for the nominated occupation, and only experience obtained after meeting the entry-level requirements is considered skilled.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Pay the correct application fees at the time of submission.
- Provide one recent passport-sized color photograph that is no more than six months old and of high quality.
- Submit at least one primary identity document (e.g., passport or birth certificate) and two secondary identity documents (e.g., national ID, driver’s license, social security card, marriage certificate, student ID, or Australian visa).
- If applicable, provide evidence of any name changes to address inconsistencies in submitted documents.
- Submit qualifications, including award certificates and transcripts.
- Provide employment evidence for each position listed in your skills assessment application. For priority processing, employment evidence must be verifiable within 10 business days and may include statements of service, payment evidence, organizational charts, project evidence, or research documentation if applicable. Self-employed applicants must provide business registration details, business activity statements, and tax returns.
Note: VETASSESS does not accept doctoral studies supported solely by living allowances or scholarships. For skilled employment to be considered ‘remunerated,’ it must be paid at or near the market rate for the occupation, consistent with Department of Home Affairs requirements. Individuals receiving minimal living allowances or scholarships covering study expenses do not qualify as remunerated.
- Submit a detailed resume.
