Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) Overview

The Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) allows skilled workers who have been nominated by an Australian state or territory to live and work as permanent residents. This visa applies to individuals with occupations listed under the skilled migration program, offering 427 different roles eligible for migration. Visa holders are required to live and work in the nominating state or territory for a minimum of two years.

Applicants can include their spouse/partner and children in their visa application under the “Subsequent Entrant” option.

Processing Time

Eligibility Criteria

Points Test
This visa is points-tested. You must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect and score at least 65 points to be considered.

Age
Applicants must be under 45 years of age when invited to apply. If you turn 45 after being invited, you may still apply, but invitations are not extended to those who turn 45 after submitting an EOI.

Skilled Occupation
Your nominated occupation must be listed on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).

Skills Assessment
A valid skills assessment is required at the time of invitation. The assessment must have been completed within three years prior to the invitation date.

English Language Requirement
You must meet the minimum English proficiency standards:

  • IELTS: At least 6 in each component.
  • TOEFL iBT: Minimum scores in listening (12), reading (13), writing (21), speaking (18).
  • CAE: At least 169 in each component.
  • PTE: At least 50 in each component.
  • OET: Score of B in all components.

State and Territory-Specific Criteria

Victoria (VIC)

  • Applicants must work in a targeted sector using STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine) skills.
  • Priority sectors include health, medical research, life sciences, digital, agri-food, advanced manufacturing, and new energy.

New South Wales (NSW)

  • Applicants must meet the criteria for one of three streams: living and working in Regional NSW, completing recent study in Regional NSW, or having skills in high-demand occupations.
  • Registration of Interest (ROI) is required during designated submission windows.

South Australia (SA)

  • Offers multiple streams including the Talent and Innovators Program, Employment Stream, and Start-Up/Small Business Stream.
  • Special considerations for applicants currently residing and working in South Australia or its regional areas.

Western Australia (WA)

  • Eligibility is based on WA’s Skilled Migration Occupation Lists (WASMOL). Applicants must hold a job offer for at least 12 months and meet settlement fund requirements.

Tasmania (TAS)

  • Nomination categories include Tasmania Graduate, Working in Tasmania, and Overseas Applicants with Job Offers, among others.

Queensland (QLD)

  • Graduates from Queensland universities, skilled workers, and small business owners can apply for nomination under specific criteria.
  • Currently, the offshore stream is closed.

Northern Territory (NT)

  • Open for new onshore nominations. Interstate graduates and students must meet specific criteria to qualify for nomination.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

  • Nomination available for Canberra residents or overseas applicants working in occupations on the ACT Critical Skills List. PhD holders are eligible for streamlined nomination.
